GAN at the 2019 edition of Salone del Mobile in Milan

The history of furniture design is written in large part at Salone del Mobile in Milan, one of the most important international industry events, where future iconic designs are presented to the world. As every year, GAN participated at the 58th edition of Salone, from April 9 to 14, where it presented its new collections: Backstitch by Raw-Edges and Nuances by Patricia Urquiola.

Backstitch, designed by the London studio Raw-Edges for their first-time collaboration with GAN, is a collection of three rugs -available in two colors- that explores the beauty of the hidden, highlighting the reverse of traditional embroidery work. Yael and Shay explore with this collection the possibilities of handlooms and textile crafts with the precision that characterizes them. Backstitch, which is made of pure wool and hand-embroidered by the women of GAN’s Women Unit, turns the rug concept (literally) upside down and vindicates, in a conceptual but delicate way, the side that usually remains hidden.

Patricia Urquiola, a faithful contributor to GAN and one of the most internationally recognized designers, broke the mold again this year with Nuances, a collection of three rugs and a pouf with which she explores the possibilities of wool felt. The designer wanted to reinvent this warm, natural and malleable material, to achieve a manufacturing technique that would allow her to recycle discarded materials. The result is an agglomeration of wool of different colors and densities of stone-like appearance, novel and transgressive. In this way, Urquiola has created a spectacular collection, which, through architectural geometries, three natural color palettes and integral embroidery work, immerses us in a purposely sensorial and artistic experience.

Also during Salone, at the Cassina showroom on Via Durini, the designer presented Round Mirage, a new addition to the successful Mirage collection, where curved lines take center stage, creating optical illusions through the combination of colors and the rotation of color gradients on a hand-knotted rug made of New Zealand wool.

Patricia Urquiola and Raw-Edges’s collections are based on traditional craftsmanship and natural materials, which they transform, through design, research and their innovative talent, into unprecedented and unsuspected results. Both of their visions share with GAN the principle of design that condenses the best of the past, the present and the future.

Thanks for the warm welcome and… until the next edition!
