Hotels have gone from being transit places to being an experience themselves. Today, the best hotels are destinations where wellness is a priority, and they offer an environment that adapts to new lifestyles and work from home. This is always done by enhancing the connection with the local culture and by providing a distinctive style.
If there is one key piece that really has an impact on all of these factors, that is the rug. It is a high-quality handcrafted design made with natural fabrics and that provides the indispensable warmth, personality and comfort that is often a crucial part of the trip.
A warm and unforgettable welcoming
The common areas of a hotel are responsible for giving that good first impression. The lobby of the Milanese boutique hotel Room Mate Giulia is a good example of this. The rug designed by Patricia Urquiola, author of the interior design project, and realised by the GAN CUSTOM program, evokes a tile floor and combines neutral tones with more vivid colors within a grid pattern. Its presence gives a soul to an eclectic room that fuses tradition and innovation, as it is usual in Urquiola’s designs.

The GAN CUSTOM program allows you to create fully customized rugs, a highly appreciated capacity in the hospitality sector and in contract projects in general, where often the goal is to design truly unique spaces.
GAN rugs not only stand out for their unique aesthetic strength, but they also fulfill practical functions: they help delineate areas, provide warmth, they are sound-absorbing and have a dampening rug pad, something essential when it comes to busy spaces, designed to meet the needs of both guests and employees.

Pieces that bring personality
A minimalist decoration needs the counterpoint of color and texture provided by some of GAN’s most graphic collections, meanwhile, rooms with character can opt for neutral colors or smooth blocks. The truth is that any room is susceptible to be equipped by a rug and improve its aesthetic in aspects such as texture, luminosity or depth depending on the case.

Hotel Muchele in South Tyrol is a charming retreat of 40 rooms. The three Ganthaler sisters, third generation of the family, lead the new era of this establishment focused on wellness and the enjoyment of the natural environment. Each of the suites at the Hotel Muchele has a distinctive personality thanks to the choice of furniture, lighting and different textile accessories. The elegance of nature, like the fibers that make up GAN rugs, helps extol the bond with nature and landscape.
GAN designs such as DEGRADE, Patricia Urquiola, CATANIA, Sandra Figuerola, BACKSTITCH, Raw-Edges, and NAIDU and LIMA, both by Odosdesign, are integrated into each room and, in turn, reinforce the features of each of the rooms. These proposals -made by hand using different techniques such as hand-knotted, embroidery or kilim- demonstrate how to transform the close and vibrant character of the Muchele in environments such as a reading section, a lounge, a private lounge or a natural extension of an inviting king-size bed.

“Hotel, sweet hotel”
Choosing well the shapes and colors of a rug, as well as its materials, is key to achieving goals such as multiplying light, providing calm or dynamism, or even enhancing architectural features. The new Haworth Hotel in Michigan is home to some of the most welcoming spaces featuring rugs designed by Patricia Urquiola exclusively for the Haworth Collection and produced by GAN. The renovation of this hotel has been driven by the Haworth family, owner of the brand of office furniture of the same name and of which GAN is a partner.
Haworth Hotel is characterized by warm, sophisticated spaces with a fun touch where to socialize, work, meet and, ultimately, enjoy an experience. The wool rugs that decorate common areas and work areas are a safe bet, as they combine softness, insulation, flexibility and durability.

On the same note, recycled PET is very resistant and, in addition, very easy to maintain, an ideal material for outdoor contact with external agents such as moisture or sunlight and busy areas. This is the case of PATCH and DIAGONALES, two series of rugs available in different colors and woven with recycled PET fibers, also designed by Urquiola for Haworth Collection. PATCH, which is made with the dhurrie technique that forms an interesting grid pattern, adds movement and dynamism to one of the relaxation areas of the main floor of the Haworth. DIAGONALES is made using the hand loom technique, it helps to anchor and define one of the hotel’s spacious lounges, by creating a distinctive spatial limit thanks to its combination of neutral and saturated colors.

As many styles as destinations
Throughout its more than 15 years of experience, the GAN team has equipped hotels all over the world, being aware of how textile accessories can make a difference both in an opulent building and in a charming urban hotel or in a resort in the middle of nature. For example, it has been detected a growing interest in rural hotels. These are capable of extolling traditional artisan work, as well as connecting with the land and the past through patterns inspired by ancient cultures. On the other hand, the pieces of great inspiration and characterized by an “arty” touch tend to be the favorites of both the most colorful and transgressive establishments and boutique hotels that have been renovated in the name of art and avant-garde designs. Something that is trendy and common to all types of hotels are the rugs designed specifically for outdoors, and that in the GAN catalogue are taking more and more space thanks to the various collections -in colors, shapes and volumes- of the GAN OUTDOOR section.
