Garden Layers, recognized as “Fuera de Serie”

The onward march of Garden Layers ccontinues apace. On this occasion, the first outdoor collection produced by GAN and designed by Patricia Urquiola has been recognised with an award by the prestigious magazine FUERA DE SERIE, within the Home/Textile category. The Madrid based lifestyle magazine sponsors the Design and Innovation Awards, which this year celebrates its second edition. The awards are aimed at providing a platform for the Spanish design industry to promote excellence and innovation as well as entrepreneurial initiatives. They also recognise the importance that good design can have in our daily lives.

The Garden Layers collection, which was inspired by Mughal architecture and culture, includes a range of rugs, mattresses, roll pillows and cushions. Its innovative fabrics and fillings were specifically adapted for the outdoors, in order to withstand the harshest climatic conditions. Its neutral colour range and patterns together with its fringe border detailing also make it easy to combine with other elements from the same collection, complimenting any terrace or deck or beach.

This year, the awards ceremony was held on November 14th at the Antigua Fábrica de Damm (the original factory where Damm beer was manufactured), in Barcelona.  Products in 20 categories were recognised; Furniture, Residential, Tableware, Lighting, Hotel, Home/Textile, Bathroom, Shops, Refurbishment, Materials, Sustainability, Technology, Beauty, Jewellery, Sports, Packaging, Mobility, Accessories, Crafts and the Volkswagen Prize for Social Innovation. The winners will be on display at the Sala de la Brasería. The jury for this year’s awards included a range of figures drawn from the world of design, education and business: María Eugenia Girón, director of the Observatorio del Mercado Premium and Productos de Prestigio at the IE Business School (Madrid); Miguel de Oriol, director of the studio E.A.3 (Madrid); Mario Ruiz, industrial designer; Mónica Piera, history of art specialist in furniture and president of the Asociación para el Estudio del Mueble as well as a collaborator with the Museu del Disseny de Barcelona; Txema Ybarra, architecture and design journalist and contributor to FUERA DE SERIE; Luis Sans, owner of the Santa Eulalia department store (Barcelona) and last but not least Ivan Martínez-Cubells, director of FUERA DE SERIE magazine.

The glittering occasion was a showcase for some of the most prestigious Spanish design brands as well as a Who’s Who of designers and entrepreneurs. Alejandra Gandía-Blasco (Assistant Creative and Communications Director for the GANDIABLASCO firm) collected the award for Garden Layers on behalf of GAN.
